Sibelius Access Known Issues

The following are issues which users have encountered whilst using Sibelius Access. Each issue is briefly described within the headings below. The steps which can be taken to resolve the issue are written immediately below the heading.

The score locks up when leaving the Verbosity dialog.

Press Alt+Equals to zoom to 400%. This should make the score free up.

The navigation keystrokes do not work and a message says that the plug-in is not responding.

You must make sure that both JAWS and Sibelius are using the correct keystroke to trigger the access plug-in.

  1. Press Control+Comma to open the preferences dialog.
  2. Tab to the list that shows which dialog page is being shown.
  3. Select the item "Menus and Shortcuts".
  4. Press Tab once. You should be in a combo box and the selected item should be "Access desktop or access laptop. If neither of these options is chosen, press Home to go to the top of the list and then press down arrow until the option you want is selected. (Choose access laptop if you are using a laptop keyboard and access desktop if you are using a keyboard with a numeric key pad at the right end.)
  5. Tab to the list called "menu or category".
  6. Select the item "plug-ins".
  7. Tab to the list called "feature".
  8. Press home to make sure that the first item is selected and then press down arrow until "Access" is selected.
  9. Tab to the Add button and press space to open the add keystroke dialog.
  10. Tab to the edit box whose name begins with the words "key: hotkey".
  11. Press Insert+NumberRow3to make sure that the next keystroke you press will be sent directly to Sibelius. JAWS should say "pass key through".
  12. Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 0.
  13. Tab to the OK button and press space.
  14. A message may pop up saying that the keystroke is being used by another plug-in. If it does, press the Yes button. The add keystroke dialog closes and you'll be returned to the preferences dialog.
  15. Tab to the OK button and press space. The preferences dialog will close and you will be returned to the score.
  16. Press Insert + 8 on the number row to open the JAWS keyboard manager.
  17. Make sure that Sibelius 5 is selected in the list of applications.

  22. Tab to the OK button and press Space.
  23. A message saying "Are you sure you want to modify Sibelius5.JKM" may pop up. If it does, tab to the yes button and press Space.
  24. You will be returned to the main keyboard manager view.
  25. Press Alt+F4 to close the keyboard manager.

Now try navigating in the score.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+P does not open or close the properties window.

This is most probably because the keystroke in the JAWS key map file does not match the keystroke in Sibelius. You must change the JAWS keystroke so that it is the same as the keystroke Sibelius uses.

  1. Press JAWS+8 on the number row to open the keyboard manager.
  2. Select "Sibelius5" in the list of applications.
  3. Tab to the list of keystrokes and choose one of the scripts that begins with the text "OpenAndClose". The last part of the name will be the window that the keystroke opens. EG: OpenAndCloseProperties, OpenAndCloseMixer, etc.
  4. From the menus choose Actions > Add Keystroke to open the add keystroke dialog.
  5. In the asign to keystroke field, press the keystroke that is shown in Sibelius' windoww menu. EG: Ctrl+Alt+K for the keypad window.
  6. Tab to the OK button and press Space.
  7. A message saying "Are you sure you want to modify Sibelius5.JKM" may pop up. If it does, tab to the yes button and press Space.
  8. You will be returned to the main keyboard manager view.
  9. Press Alt+F4 to close the keyboard manager.

The tool window should now open and close.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+K to open and close the keypad window causes Kurzweil K1000 to start.

The Kurzweil K1000 OCR program adds a shortcut key of Alt+Control+K to the system. This conflicts with the keystroke that Sibelius uses to open and close the keypad window. You must change the K1000 keystroke to something which Sibelius doesn't use. Alt+Shift+K and Alt+Ctrl+Shift+K will suffice.

  1. Open the start menu and find the menu item which runs K1000.
  2. Press Shift+F10 to open this item's context menu.
  3. Press up arrow until properties is selected and then press Enter.
  4. Tab to the "shortcut" edit box.
  5. Press the shortcut key that you want to use. (Alt+Shift+K or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+K are recommended.)
  6. Tab to the OK button and press Space.

The shortcut key must also be changed from within Kurzweil K1000 itself.

  1. Load Kurzweil K1000.
  2. From the main menus choose settings > configuration.
  3. Tab to the shortcut field and press the same keystroke you used above.
  4. Tab to the apply button and press Space.
  5. Tab to the OK button and press Space.

The keypad window should now open and close after pressing Ctrl+Alt+K.

Optimise tool windows causes Kurzweil K1000 to start.

This is the same problem as that which is experienced after pressing Ctrl+Alt+K to open or close the keypad window. Read Pressing Ctrl+Alt+K to open and close the keypad window causes Kurzweil K1000 to start.

Using the playback devices dialog causes Sibelius to crash.

This problem is caused by a conflict between JAWS and Sibelius and there is currently no way to script around it. This problem is being investigated more closely, but until a solution can be found this dialog cannot be supported. You use it at your own risk.

A sighted assistant can use this dialog for you, however, you must shut JAWS down before they begin their work.

If you must use the playback devices dialog unaided, save any open scores to avoid losing your work and use the JAWS cursor alone to manipulate the controls. Do not use the keyboard keystrokes normally associated with navigating and manipulating dialog controls because these can cause the crash.
